From Brief to World-Record Product

Client

ProFISHiency is a performance focused fishing brand known for bold design and accessible innovation. They specialize in rods, reels, and combos built for modern anglers, blending eye-catching aesthetics with functional engineering to deliver high-quality gear at competitive price points across freshwater and recreational markets.

Challenge

The goal was clear: make a splash by challenging the market leader with a faster reel, while also making it more compact and ergonomic. A 31 IPT retrieve had never been achieved in a spincast reel, and existing high-speed designs relied on oversized gears. Those larger gears resulted in bulky, heavy reels that feel awkward to use.

Idea

The core idea centered on using a multi-stage gear train to achieve a high gear ratio within a tightly constrained package. Instead of relying on oversized primary gears, we distributed the load across multiple interacting components, allowing us to increase speed without increasing overall size. This approach enabled a compact, ergonomic form factor while still delivering the high retrieve rate required to outperform existing designs.

Execution

We followed a structured, end-to-end development process to move from concept to production-ready design.

Listening to the Customer

We started by aligning closely with the client’s goals—understanding performance targets, cost constraints, and brand expectations. This ensured every decision tied back to what mattered most: outperforming the competition without overengineering the product.

Market Research

We analyzed existing spincast reels, focusing on where competitors succeeded and where they fell short. This revealed a consistent tradeoff between speed and ergonomics—validating the opportunity to differentiate through both.

Ideation

With clear targets defined, we explored multiple mechanical architectures. Concepts were evaluated based on gear ratio potential, packaging efficiency, and manufacturability before narrowing in on the optimal gear train approach.

Industrial Design

Form development focused on creating a compact, modern profile that felt balanced in-hand. We worked to integrate performance-driven components into a cohesive design language that aligned with the brand while improving usability.

3D Modeling

Detailed CAD models were developed to fully define the internal architecture and external form. This allowed us to refine tolerances, validate fitment, and ensure all components worked together seamlessly within a constrained space.

Prototyping

We produced iterative prototypes to test performance, assembly, and durability. Each round provided critical feedback, allowing us to fine-tune the design and eliminate risk before moving into production.

Impact

The Sniper launched as the fastest spincast reel in the world, a verified, marketable claim that ProFISHiency now leads with across all product communications.

This wasn’t just a spec improvement, it became a positioning advantage. By breaking a meaningful performance barrier, the product immediately differentiated itself in a crowded category and gave the brand a clear, defensible message that resonated with both retailers and end users.

Beyond marketing, the reel delivered on the promise. Anglers experienced faster line pickup, smoother operation, and improved ergonomics—reinforcing credibility and driving positive perception at the point of use.

Equally important, the product was engineered for scale. The design translated cleanly into production, hit cost targets, and avoided the common pitfalls of over-engineered concepts that fail during manufacturing.
